Record Dept. Music Reviews is a Portland based music review site that provides concise music reviews of new releases from a variety of genres like indie rock, blue-grass, alt-country, country, roots, folk, blues, and soul. Launched in 2009 as a blog for sharing new music discoveries, Record Dept. quickly became a go-to resource for domestic and international music lovers.
The concept is based around the idea of old U.S. government department collateral and documents, and how there are treasures waiting to be rediscovered in dusty old filerooms across the country. Part of the retro aesthetic is the nod to craftsmanship through the use of letterpress, providing an interesting counterbalance to the digital nature of the reviews, which include video and artist links. Now in its sixth year, Record Dept. has published over 2000 reviews and participated in major music festivals like SXSW, Bumbershoot, and Pickathon.
